Dissemination_of_ESBL_enzymes_among_Vibrio_cholerae_isolates_from_Kenya

We have a collection of 19 V. cholerae isolated in the years 2009/2010 from Dadaab refugee camp patients. The V. cholerae are resistant to third generation cephalosporins. Preliminary results show that the isolates carry an IncA/C plasmid similar to V. cholerae from Haiti isolated in the year 2012. However, we hypothesize that the Kenyan V. cholerae isolates have CTX-M-15 enzymes because there were also positive for ISEcp1. Additionally, 21 V. cholerae isolates from the year 2015 show low level resistance to third generation cephalosporins attributed to GES-like Enzymes by PCR. The aim of this project is to determine the mobile genetic elements carrying resistance determinants to third generation cephalosporins among V. cholerae. This will help us better understand the genetic environment of plasmid (IncA/C) in the phage and the role they play in dissemination of ESBL genes among Vibrio cholerae isolates.
