Further crystal field excitation data for pyrochlore zirconates.

DOI

Nd2Zr2O7 (NZO), synthesized and supplied to us by Tokura and Onose, is a new candidate spin ice while Pr2Zr2O7 (PZO) if anything even more promising is supplied to us by Matsuhira [6]. Like Ho2Ti2O7 and Dy2Ti2O7 it is a pyrochlore, an electrical insulator and contains only one magnetic species. PZO has the additional attraction of sharing the spin ice residual entropy, a sign that it obeys ice rules over short range. We require measurements of the excitations at 60 and 150 meV both of NZO at 600 K and non-magnetic lanthanum zirconate at 4.5, 300 K and 600 K. The NZO measurements were taken on HET while PZO was taken on MARI. Since HET is unavailable we propose to perform the experiments on MARI. We propose 1 day for combined set up and 2 days for measurement making 3 days in total.
