This proposal seeks to gain an understanding of the adsorption and desorption behaviour of a redox membrane protein, cytochrome c, in electrochemical cells using different anode materials, in an attempt to better understand the electron transfer mechanism for current generation that occurs in biophotovoltaic cells. Neutron reflectometry offers a unique opportunity to view the structure of the surface adsorbed protein (and subsequently monitor its desorption) whilst varying the potential of the electrochemical cell. The use of event mode is proposed to fully characterise the system during a full cycle of the cell.
