Modulating Tetronics self-assembly with cyclodextrins for drug delivery applications

Amphiphilic linear surfactants based on PEO and PPO triblock copolymers, known as Pluronics, exhibit a rich polymorphism and have been extensively studied for their applications in drug delivery and targeting. This work focuses on an interesting and far less studied family of polymeric surfactants based on PEO and PPO known as Tetronics, which are four-armed (X-shaped) copolymers. Tetronics show advantages over Pluronics; in particular, the central ethylene diamine unit imparts pH-sensitivity for drug loading and release, and site-specific delivery. Following on from our substantial body of work on the interactions between Pluronics or Tetronics and cyclodextrins, we here seek to establish the details of Tetronic/cyclodextrins self-assembly structures to develop versatile drug delivery vehicles and complement our existing phase behaviour studies using DLS, XRD and viscometry.
