Probing stray field distributions in silver arising from patterned ferromagnetic films

DOI

We propose to investigate muon spin depolarization in silver resulting from stray magnetic fields from a nickel film that has been photo-lithographically patterned into a series of micron sized features. We will examine the correspondence between muon spin depolarisation in the Ag plate and the form of the stray field distribution on the plate due to the patterned ferromagnet. An understanding of this relationship should greatly enhance the utility of measurements carried out in stray fields, and may provide a basis for a potentially new avenue of application for muon spectroscopy: as a non-intrusive probe of the properties of magnetic nanostructures, an area of research where µSR has yet to make a significant impact. Room temperature µSR measurements will be made on samples both in the presence of a transverse field (100G) and in zero field after magnetizing the sample.
