Building on our preliminary neutron transmission results from the CRISP instrument (see below), we propose to undertake a detailed study of critical fluctuations in 3He near its critical point. Neutrons provide a powerful tool for the investigation of critical collective excitations. In our recent experiment on CRISP, we observed neutron critical opalescence near the 3He critical point for the first time. Our preliminary data demonstrate some quite unexpected behavior: near the critical temperature (~3K) the neutron transmission is significantly higher then would be expected, just based on the average density of 3He atoms. In order to confirm and further investigate this important observation in a more comprehensive way, we propose a new series of transmission experiments on CRISP to collect more information about the transmission of neutrons in 3He near the critical point.
