Neutron scattering techniques at the time-of-flight spectrometers at ISIS have shown that there is a well defined excitation with an energy of about 400 meV in YBCO. A similar energy has been found in LSCO with x-ray scattering techniques. We plan to use powered samples of LSCO with a range of different dopings to find out firstly whether the scattering can be observed in different systems but with the same experimental technique although they do have different selection rules. Secondly to investigate whether the energy changes monotonically and steadily decreases with increasing doping in the superconductor.
