Magnetic hysteresis loops in off-specular scattering

DOI

Reflectometry is a technique that is capable of vector magnetometry. By selecting the appropriate valves of Q we could access the different forms of magnetic disorder, either ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic, within multilayer nanostructures. We propose to make use of the time of flight technique and the larger Q range on the Offspec instrument to measure the magnetic hysteresis loops over a large off-specular range. This will be achieved by measuring the four reflected neutron spin states during field driven magnetisation reversal. Firstly in a well characterised Co/Ru multilayer to test the technique and then laterally patterned Co/Ru sample both of which display strong off specular scattering.
