Neutron reflection from surface-induced nana-stratified He-3/He-4 mixtures

DOI

It is proposed to use neutron reflectometry to study surface-induced nano-stratification of 3He-4He mixtures in the ultra-low temperature limit. The experiment promises to provide a new system consisting of an almost perfect quasi-two-dimensional Fermi liquid film of few hundred Angstroms thickness, on the surface of superfluid 4He. In order to form a layer of 3He with well-defined boundaries, the temperature of the system is required to be as low as ~ 30mK which can however be easily achieved using the KelvinoxVT dilution refrigerator provided by ISIS sample environment group. The results are expected to be of interest to researchers on quantum fluids, high temperature superconductors, quasi-two-dimensional superconducting films, astrophysics, hydrodynamics, and ocean surface dynamics.
