The recent exciting observations in the magnetic excitation spectra of cobalt oxides that are isostructural to the prototypical high-temperature superconducting cuprates have shown the importance to study also copper-free reference systems. Here, we would like to study the spin excitations of another copper-free reference system - highly oxidized nickelates La(2-x)Sr(x)NiO4. Although the low-doped nickelates (x > 1/2). Whereas a robust charge stripe phase occurs at lower hole-doping the role of holes and Ni2+ ions is reversed at high hole-doping. Indeed, we observe unexpected magnetic correlations at high hole-doping and need to extend our studies to a higher energy range now in order to understand these surprising findings.
