The structure of aprotic and aromatic solvents

In this proposal we would like to study the structure of polar aprotic and aromatic liquids using H/D and 15N/*N isotopic labelling on SANDALS. The molecules chosen for study here are pyridine, NMP, CHP, DMF and naphthalene. There are dual general motivations for this research. First, there is considerable fundamental interest in the structure of these molecular liquids, both as a window into polar and aromatic interactions and also as a test bed for simulations and quantum chemistry. Second, there is currently intense interest in these liquids as aprotic solvents for carbon nanostructures including graphene and nanotubes. In the case of NMP, DMF and CHP we request time to study two temperatures (~250 and 350K). We will analyse the data using Gudrun and EPSR.
