Olympia Oyster (Ostrea lurida) populations rapidly declined in Washington over a century ago. Currently, there are efforts by the state of Washington DNR to monitor Ostrea lurida recruitment in and around eelgrass beds. The DNR has been studying the impact of eelgrass and certain environmental conditions on the shellfish community at various locations throughout the Puget Sound. My study utilizes a subpopulation of Ostrea lurida from Fidalgo Bay, WA, to test the microbial composition of the oyster gut at some of these sites. Oysters were outplanted in the field sites for 2-3 months and upon collection, the gut contents were dissected and 3 replicates of soil, water and shell swabs were taken. This study will compare Ostrea lurida gut microbiome to the surrounding environment and determine if any variables, including eelgrass habitat, pH, geographic location and potentially genetics, influence the microbiome composition.
