Adsorption of liquid crystal nanostructured particles to model hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces using neutron reflectivity

Cubosomes and hexosomes are particles with internal liquid crystal structures of the bicontinuous cubic or reverse hexagonal nanostructures respectively. The nanostructure imparts desirable properties for the delivery of pharmaceuticals and agricultural applications. Their use for delivery of active ingredients to surfaces, such as skin or plant leaves requires characterisation of their adsorption behaviour. Using neutron reflectometry we will investigate the adsorption of these particles onto model hydrophilic (silicon) and hydrophobic (tristearin) surfaces, to understand the parameters affecting the adsorption such as particle nanostructure and composition and to determine the effect of adsorption on particle nanostructure.
