This proposals aims to investigate the atomic and intermediate range structure in model membrane environments. By beginning with a disperse system of a phosphocholine lipid in hexane solutions we propose to measure the structure of this lipid in a membrane-like environment as hexane is similar to the inner layer of a lipid membrane in nature. Further we propose to add water to these systems, leading to the formation of larger structures, either reverse micelles with smaller water quantities or a gel upon the addition of larger amounts of water. Investigations into these systems will allow for a better understand of the hydration of the phophocholine lipid in a membrane and all help to investigate the association between lipid molecules in solution which lead to the formation of larger scale structures.
