Solventless protein liquids: a novel form of biological matter

Solventless protein liquids (SPLS) represent a novel form of biological matter. Recently we reported on the preparation and properties of a solvent-free liquid protein based on a stoichiometric ferritin-polymer nanoscale construct, with surface modifications that extend the range of intermolecular interactions to a length scale that is commensurate with fluidity1. The aim of this investigation is to use contrast variation SANS (CV-SANS) with deuterated surfactants to study these new protein-surfactant conjugates in the aqueous phase and as the solvent-free fluid. Only through CV-SANS will it be possible to elucidate the nanostructure of these conjugates.
