In-situ hydrogen decomposition studies of ammonia borane and the diammoniate of diborane
Ammonia borane (AB) is one of the most promising hydrogen storage materials. We have extensively studied the low temperature behaviour of this material This proposal asks for 3 days on WISH to study the transformation of ND3(11)BD3 from 250K to above room temperature into the reported "mobile" phase and its subsequent decomposition through the formation of the diammoniate of diborane (DADB). Having obtained DADB, we wish to study the structural evolution of this material from 10K to its decomposition. We will work with the WISH scientists to study these reactions in Event Data Collection Mode. These real-time experiments will enable us to observe the nature of the decomposition mechanisms in AB and DADB which highlight the general role of dihydrogen bonding in chemical hydrides.
