Optimizing surfactants for CO2

This experiment addresses an important, and still unresolved, question in the field CO2-philic surfactants: what is the minimum fluorine content necessary to obtain a CO2-philic surfactant? A previous publication1 (Effects of fluorocarbon surfactant chain structure on stability of water-in-carbon dioxide microemulsions), indicated an ideal fluorination level, and now for optimization of possible process applications in CO2 it is important to establish just how little F is needed. The request for a 3 day High-Pressure SANS (HP-SANS) session will allow for greater understanding about this low F-content approach. This is part of a significant collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh, funded by the UK EPSRC through a Next Generation Facility User grant ¿Neutron scattering studies of CO2-based gels¿ (EP/F020686 the PhD is co-investigator SC), and the US Department of Energy (US-DOE).
