Neutron Diffraction study of Highly Frustrated SrEr2O4

DOI

We propose to measure the neutron diffraction pattern of a single crystal sample of SrEr2O4, using the WISH diffractometer. As the magnetic Er ions in this compound are linked to eachother by a network of triangles and hexagons, geometric frustration affects both the formation of the magnetic ground state and the dynamic properties of the system. Previous single crystal diffraction studies below T_N upon this material on the PRISMA diffractometer revealed diffuse scattering indicative of short-range correlations, and this scattering is both temperature and field dependent. Of particular interest are rod-like diffuse scattering features visible in the (0kl) plane for which the Miller indices L are approximately 0.5 and 1.5, which have been seen to shift in position upon application of a magnetic field. We intend to further investigate the magnetic field dependence of these features.
